Physical Therapist
Mike Broe, PT, DPT, CSCS, is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist at TULA Physical Therapy & Wellness in Greenwich Village. His clinical practice focuses on orthopedic rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and cardiopulmonary fitness. He primarily works with older adults, athletes returning to sport, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, and any individual looking to improve their overall physical health.
Mike’s approach to rehabilitation is centered on graded exercise. Treatment begins by identifying what a patient can currently tolerate and then progressively increasing the intensity, volume, and complexity of the program as their symptoms and capacity improve. He believes that rehabilitation should not look vastly different from normal physical training. As a patient progresses, treatment should increasingly resemble the movements, physical demands, and activities they are preparing to return to.
Mike considers pain within the broader context of a patient’s physical health, training history, stress, beliefs, and confidence with movement. Pain is taken seriously, but it is not viewed in isolation. Rather than providing patients with a growing list of things they should avoid, he believes his role is to help them understand what they are still able to do and provide a clear roadmap for moving forward. The goal is to help patients work around pain when necessary and give them permission to move again.
As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under world champion Marcelo Garcia, Mike has a particular interest in treating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and combat-sport athletes. His extensive experience in the sport gives him a practical understanding of its physical demands and allows him to design rehabilitation programs that account for the performance requirements involved in returning to the mat.
Mike earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Hunter College and his Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology from Wagner College. His background in biopsychology continues to influence the way he approaches pain, behavior change, and the psychological components of rehabilitation. Outside of the clinic, Mike continues to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, archery, and of course strength training.
